Glad you found a solution! I had no suggestions, anyway. Just, it does no good to get precious over any knits handed over to small children, especially small boy children. And they have no concept of what actually goes into knitting it, even if they watch. My 5yo will tell me in the evening what he wants his sweater to look like, and wake up in the morning asking if he can wear his sweater to school.
