Just so you know…

…I don’t think I could ever make a living knitting because I really don’t enjoy doing the same thing twice. There’s a lady in town that makes a small fortune knitting original scarves for Gus Mayer. She probably puts $20-$50 into materials and they sell for around $250. Sounds awesome, until I think about having to knit scarf, after scarf, after scarf…ad infinitum. Then it starts to sound like purgatory.

Woo Hoo!

Thanks to a “50% off one item” coupon from my friendly neighborhood LYS, I am now the proud owner of one of these:

To all you non-knitters. This is a big deal, trust me.

Naturally…

Moments after my last post, I came across this picture:

Echo Flower Fail

Here we see a picture of my Echo Flower Shawl as of two days ago:

IMG_2450

I’m about 50g into a 100g skein (roughly 225 yards knit up out of 450 total) and ready to start the border. Now see how it looks today:

IMG_2454

Yup. Frogged (Rip it! Rip it!). I was a few lines into the border when I realized I just didn’t like the pattern. The main body looked a teensy bit on the elderly side, and the border had all these nupps (pronounced “noops” as in “soups”) which are little clusters of stitches you gather together to look like a flat ball. And suddenly I realized I was knitting a little old lady shawl as opposed to a hip, young, boho-chic accessory type shawl. So I ripped it all out.

Sure, I could have kept going and given it away. I’m sure there are plenty of people who would think it was great. But in my mind that would be the equivalent of saying, “Hi, you are old and/or have horrible taste. Enjoy!”

Strangely, ripping out all that yardage didn’t bother me in the least. Because I really love that burnt orange skein of Malabrigo Sock, and it would be a bigger shame to waste it than to throw away a few hours’ (okay, maybe a week’s) worth of knitting time.

Has anyone else ever been that far into a project before having knitter’s remorse or have I just set a record for wasted effort?

Stream of Consciousness

Jack says:

Mom? Can I have a meltdown? (He means tortilla chips with cheese melted on top. The other kind…well they never seem to ask before having those).

Oh, wait. I just accidentally asked for a meltdown and when I got it I realized that what I really wanted was a ham sandwich like Tom. So can I have a ham sandwich? Thanks, Mom!

Ooh! What are you eating? Boy! That looks really good. I wish I could’ve had something like that when I was a little boy.

Ugh! Never mind. I don’t like potatoes. Or peas. Is that Indian food? Did people from India make it?

Is it raining yet? I thought you said it was going to rain today! When is it going to start raining? Is Africa very far?

This was just a snippet of our lunch conversation — when his mouth was at least occasionally occupied with food. Imagine the rest of my day. Now add in the devastating fact that this is only Wednesday. Pardon me while I go hide in the bathroom for a while.

Home Alone

One week of nothing but me and the boys.

The feverish boys.

The feverish boys who cannot go outside and play without vomiting.

The feverish boys who have already pulled all the cushions off the couch and ripped the covers off of most of the beds in the interest of making tents because they cannot go outside without vomiting.

Four more days of this.

I am not afraid…

…not much.

Rainy Sunday

“Mommy! I don’t have any clothes on!” Tommy exclaimed, grabbing my face and turning into his — the better to help me understand the gravity of the situation.

“That’s o.k. baby. We’re not going anywhere today. You can just wear your Star Wars jammies all day.”

“Are we going to a pajammy party?” he asked excitedly. Although still slightly feverish, Tommy is back to is old, bubbly self — apparently forgetting all about the high fever that caused him to pass out momentarily in the bathtub last night. And the fact that he fretted and fussed and begged me not to stop rubbing his back until at least 4 o’clock this morning.

Mommy, on the other hand, is a wreck. I wish I were one of those people who could function just as well on 3 hours of sleep as they do on 8. It would certainly come in handy on a day like today. Tom may have scared me the most, but there’s more than one set of cheeks in the house with an unhealthy bloom of color and more than one pair of fever-bright eyes looking to me to make it all better.

Thank God their dad is so awesome. And I mean that most sincerely. Despite the fact that he nursed a restless Will all night, on top of still running fever himself, he let me get a couple extra hours sleep this morning and handled all the morning chores before I could drag myself away from my pillow.

I wish I had him to lean on in the days ahead with four boys at home (some sick) and a week of rain and restlessness to look forward to. (Insert a heavy, self-pitying sigh here. Now…that’s much better.)

Enough of that. Thankfully, everyone’s illness seems mild now and hopefully we can put this phase of passing germs back and forth behind us soon. My sister promises that after everyone turns 5, the shared illnesses drop considerably. So at least I have that to look forward to.

Until then, we’ll watch the rain fall and cross our fingers we’ll see “Mr. Shunshine” again soon.

A Dog’s Life

This is Gus.

IMG_2449

Gus likes to roll in stinky things. Usually, I make Jason take care of it. But today I was feeling especially capable, the boys were being really good, and so I felt I could duck outside long enough to clean Gus up myself.

So hose on, dog at the ready, audience of 4 small boys with noses pressed to the screen…no dog shampoo. I ducked back inside and rummaged around for a substitute.

Dish washing liquid? Too harsh.

Baby Shampoo? Hmmm…perhaps a little too gentle. We’re talking industrial strength stink here.

I dig a little deeper into the cabinet. What’s left…waaayy back in the back? Head and Shoulder’s Dandruff Shampoo.

So now Gus not only smells clean, but also can rest easy knowing he won’t be embarrassed the next time he wears that sleek black turtleneck.

Happy @#$%ing Monday.

It’s all downhill from here!

The Month in Pictures

This has been quite a busy May, as you could probably tell by my habitual blogging absenteeism. So here’s a quick synopsis:

I bought one of these…

IMG_2393

…but still can’t figure out how to use it. It looked a lot easier on YouTube.

I was really excited to receive this in the mail…

IMG_2389

…and it was full of all these fun things…

IMG_2392

…but not really all I was hoping for. It’s fun to get mail, but not fun to pay $33 for something that, ultimately, is of no use whatsoever.

Then we went on vacation where the boys and I spent tons of time at the beach and in the pool. Sadly all those pictures are on Tessa’s camera, and until I get copies, you’ll just have to take my word for it. But Jason did go fishing, where he caught a bunch of these:

IMG_2406

…and saw a bunch of these:
IMG_2407

And laughed himself silly over this:

IMG_2398

Then, as we were frying up all those fish, I caught a glimpse of my rearview…

IMG_2419

…and realized a diet had become mandatory. So I’m now a member of Weight Watchers Online. Lovely. If you’re suffering there, too, look me up! I’m registered under The Drunch and need all the support I can get.

Last week was pretty horrible, as Sam had (and still seems to have) a pretty vicious case of stomach flu. There are no pictures.

You’re welcome.

That brings us to today. Wherein Will enjoys a chocolate doughnut while trying to touch his nose with his tongue…

IMG_2425

And Gus lurks nearby — ever hopeful…

IMG_2427

Which gives Sam a fit of the giggles…

IMG_2426

And leaves Tom plenty of time to clean up before I can get any embarrassing photos of him.

IMG_2428

Now Jack and Jason are at the movies catching the afternoon showing of Iron Man 2 and Sam, Tom and Will are taking turns being the baby while the other two boys are the mom and dad. Babies apparently cry a lot and demand that their “mother” bring them cups of apple juice to make them feel better. Pretty spot on so far. Don’t you wish you were here?
